Unfortunately, cannabinoid labels can read like someone dropped an organic chemistry textbook into a bowl of alphabet soup.
This guide explains the major cannabinoids found in hemp, how CBD compares with CBG, CBC and CBN, and what full-spectrum, broad-spectrum and CBD isolate actually mean. We will also examine the entourage effect, certificates of analysis and the scientific evidence behind common cannabinoid claims.
The goal is not to identify a universally “best” cannabinoid. Biology rarely cooperates with rankings that simple. The goal is to help you understand what is in a product, what the research currently supports and what remains uncertain.

What Are Cannabinoids?
Cannabinoids are chemical compounds that interact, directly or indirectly, with biological systems involved in functions such as neuronal signaling, immune activity, appetite, sleep and the response to stress.
The cannabis plant produces more than 100 identified phytocannabinoids. The two most extensively studied are:

Together, endocannabinoids, cannabinoid receptors and the enzymes that create and break down these molecules form the endocannabinoid system.

Hemp vs CBD: What Is the Difference?
Hemp and CBD are related, but they are not interchangeable terms.
Hemp is a legal and agricultural classification of the Cannabis sativa plant. CBD is one chemical compound that may be extracted from that plant.
Under the federal framework established by the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp is generally defined as Cannabis sativa L. and its derivatives containing no more than 0.3% delta-9 THC by dry weight. State laws and rules for finished cannabinoid products can differ, so this definition should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every hemp-derived retail product is compliant everywhere.
CBD may be extracted from federally defined hemp. Chemically, however, a CBD molecule does not become different simply because it came from a particular cannabis classification.

Where Do CBD, CBG and CBC Come From?

Cannabigerolic acid, or CBGA, is an important chemical precursor. Plant enzymes convert CBGA into several other acidic cannabinoids, including:

“Non-intoxicating” does not mean biologically inactive, side-effect free or appropriate for every person. It means the compound is not generally expected to produce the characteristic high associated with delta-9 THC.
CBD: The Most Studied Non-Intoxicating Cannabinoid
CBD is the most familiar hemp-derived cannabinoid and has a substantially larger research base than CBG, CBC or CBN.
CBD does not strongly activate CB1 receptors in the way THC does. Researchers have instead identified activity involving several possible targets, including serotonin receptors, transient receptor potential channels and enzymes involved in endocannabinoid metabolism.
The strongest clinical evidence for CBD relates to a purified prescription drug used for certain seizure disorders. That does not mean over-the-counter CBD products are equivalent to prescription cannabidiol. Differences in formulation, dose, purity, manufacturing controls and clinical supervision matter.

Is CBN intoxicating?

Does CBN make you sleepy?

What Is the Entourage Effect?
The entourage effect is the hypothesis that cannabinoids, terpenes and other plant compounds may interact to produce effects that differ from those of a single isolated compound.
