Historical texts also describe cannabis in traditional preparations and rituals. Translating those records into modern medical terms is difficult. Ancient plant varieties, preparation methods, doses, and cultural meanings were not standardized, and historical words do not always map neatly onto today's cannabis chemistry.
Women in Early Cannabis History
Women remain an important part of this longer history. Some ancient and early medical writings connect cannabis preparations with menstruation, childbirth, and other aspects of reproductive care. Archaeological discoveries have also found cannabis material in burial and ritual settings that included women.
These records tell us that women participated in the plant's social and medical history. They do not establish that a preparation was safe, effective, or equivalent to CBD. Ancient cannabis may have contained different mixtures of cannabinoids, and claims about a specific person or purpose are sometimes based on interpretation rather than direct evidence.

Hemp Crosses Continents
By the 16th century, hemp was widely cultivated in parts of Europe for fiber. European colonists later brought the crop to the Americas. A USDA historical report notes cultivation in Chile in the 1500s and New England in the 1600s, followed by production in Virginia and Kentucky.
In the United States, hemp became associated with cordage and sailcloth. Kentucky, Missouri, and Illinois developed notable production during the 19th century. Demand later declined as cotton, jute, abaca, changing shipping technology, international trade, and regulation reshaped the market.
This period helps explain why hemp appears in historical discussions of farming, naval supply, and manufacturing more often than CBD. Farmers were growing a fiber crop, not filling bottles with isolated cannabidiol.
Cannabis Enters 19th-Century Western Medicine

Restriction Changes the American Hemp Industry
Federal policy increasingly restricted cannabis during the 20th century. The Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 imposed registration, taxation, and administrative controls that affected cannabis cultivation, including industrial hemp.
World War II briefly changed the calculation. When imported fiber supplies became difficult to obtain, the federal government supported domestic hemp production. The USDA promoted the crop, and production peaked during the war years. Afterward, imported fibers returned, federal restrictions resumed, and domestic production declined.
The Controlled Substances Act of 1970 then placed marijuana within a strict federal framework. For decades, hemp and high-THC cannabis were often treated together under federal controls, even though they could serve very different agricultural and commercial purposes.
CBD Emerges From 20th-Century Chemistry
The modern history of CBD began when researchers separated cannabis into identifiable chemical compounds. CBD was first isolated in the 1940s. Subsequent work clarified its structure, while later research identified THC and explored how cannabinoids act in the body.
Scientific interest expanded with the discovery of cannabinoid receptors and naturally occurring signaling molecules called endocannabinoids. Together with related enzymes, these components became known as the endocannabinoid system.
The discovery of this system did not prove every claim made about CBD. It gave researchers a framework for asking better questions about cannabinoids, receptors, signaling, metabolism, and possible clinical applications. In June 2018, the FDA approved Epidiolex, a prescription oral solution containing cannabidiol, for seizures associated with two rare epilepsy syndromes. Its approved uses have since evolved through formal regulatory review.

Modern consumers have tools that earlier generations did not, including batch-specific Certificates of Analysis. A COA may show cannabinoid concentrations and reported contaminant results for a tested sample. It does not prove that a product provides a health benefit, but it can help a shopper evaluate whether the contents align with the label.
Responsible CBD education should distinguish among:

- Laboratory and animal research
- Observational human research
- Controlled clinical trials
- FDA-approved uses of a specific prescription drug
- Unapproved claims made for consumer products
Those categories can coexist without being collapsed into one sweeping promise.
